    Why convert GIF to JPEG?

    For the same picture, JPEG usually lands well under the size of the GIF original. That matters when you are trimming page weight or squeezing under an upload limit.

    GIF can carry transparency; JPEG cannot. Transparent pixels are composited onto white during conversion, so a logo with a see-through background will come out sitting on a white rectangle.

    Before doing this, it is worth checking what the GIF actually contains, because JPEG is the least suitable destination for most GIF content. GIFs are overwhelmingly graphics — logos, reaction images, screen recordings, diagrams — and graphics are exactly what JPEG handles worst. There are good reasons to do it anyway, but going in with open eyes will save you a disappointing result.

    Flat colour and hard edges are JPEG's weak spot

    JPEG compresses by discarding high-frequency detail, which is fine on a photograph and destructive on a logo. Around every crisp boundary it leaves faint halos — ringing — and across large areas of a single colour it introduces a subtle mottling that was not there. A GIF is very often precisely this kind of image. PNG or WebP will look cleaner and frequently produce a smaller file too, which makes JPEG hard to justify unless something downstream demands it.

    Transparency becomes white, with hard edges

    GIF transparency is binary — each pixel is either fully there or fully gone. JPEG has no transparency at all, so those pixels get filled with white here. Because the source edge was already a hard on/off boundary, the result has visibly stair-stepped edges rather than a smooth transition. A logo converted this way tends to look like it was cut out with scissors.

    Only the first frame comes across

    If the GIF animates, JPEG takes its opening frame and discards the rest. That frame is frequently not representative — plenty of animations start on an empty or near-empty state before anything happens. If you want the motion, you are looking for a video conversion, not a still image one.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my GIF files uploaded anywhere?

    No. The decoder and encoder are WebAssembly modules that run inside this page. The network tab may show a codec downloading the first time you use a format, but no request contains your file. On supported browsers, a codec that has already been used is cached so the same conversion can work offline.

    Is there a file size or quantity limit?

    There is no limit imposed by us. The practical ceiling is your device’s memory, since the image has to be held uncompressed while converting. On a typical laptop, images up to around 100 megapixels convert without trouble.

    Will converting to JPEG lose quality?

    JPEG is a lossy format, so some data is discarded. At the default quality setting the difference is not visible at normal viewing sizes. If you need an exact copy of the pixels, choose PNG instead.

    Does it work on a phone?

    Yes. The same WebAssembly modules run on mobile browsers. Conversion is slower than on a desktop because phone CPUs are weaker, and very large images are more likely to hit memory limits.

    What happens to an animated GIF?

    Only the first frame is converted. JPEG is a still image format, so there is nowhere for the remaining frames to go. If you need to keep the animation, you are looking for a video conversion rather than a still image one.

    What quality setting should I use?

    For photographs, 75 to 85 is the range where most people cannot tell the result from the original at normal viewing size. Below about 60 you start seeing blocky artefacts around sharp edges. Above 90 the file grows quickly in exchange for very little visible gain.
