Effects get reached for in two very different moods. One is corrective: a photo is too dark, too flat or too blue, and you want it to look like what you remember seeing. The other is stylistic: you want the image to carry a mood it did not have. The controls are the same either way, but the stopping point is not, and most over-edited images are corrective work that kept going after it was finished.
Editing a JPEG decodes it, changes it and re-encodes it, and the re-encode loses detail whether or not you changed much. Do all your adjustments in one pass rather than saving between each one, and keep the original file.
Pushing contrast clips highlights to pure white and shadows to pure black, and clipped detail cannot be brought back by lowering it again. If the image will be edited further, leave headroom at both ends.
A warm grade on a cool monitor looks neutral, and a subtle shadow lift disappears on a phone in daylight. If the image has a known destination, judge it there rather than on the screen you happen to be editing on.
