    Why convert PNG to AVIF?

    For the same picture, AVIF usually lands well under the size of the PNG original. That matters when you are trimming page weight or squeezing under an upload limit.

    If you are optimising a page and PNG is what you have, AVIF is the furthest you can currently go. It keeps transparency, and on photographic content it will beat both PNG and WebP by a wide margin. The one thing to think about first is what kind of picture you are actually converting, because AVIF's advantage is much larger on some content than others.

    Before you convert

    Photographs gain enormously; icons and line art gain much less

    AVIF's compression comes from techniques designed for photographic detail, and on a photograph the saving against PNG is dramatic — often 80 percent or more. On a flat-colour logo or a UI icon, PNG was already efficient at exactly that kind of content, and the gap narrows sharply. Lossy AVIF on a crisp icon can also soften edges in a way that is immediately visible at small sizes. For that material, lossless WebP is frequently the better answer.

    Lossless AVIF exists but rarely earns its place

    AVIF has a lossless mode, and against PNG it does win. But it is slow to encode and its margin over lossless WebP is small, so it is seldom the pragmatic pick. The reason to reach for AVIF is its lossy mode — that is where the format is genuinely ahead of everything else in production use.

    The PNG stays your master

    A lossy AVIF is an output, not an archive. Keep the PNG: formats will keep moving, and whatever comes after AVIF will be encoded best from a lossless original rather than from a lossy intermediate. This is the same discipline as keeping raw files in photography, for the same reason.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my PNG files uploaded anywhere?

    No. The decoder and encoder are WebAssembly modules that run inside this page. The network tab may show a codec downloading the first time you use a format, but no request contains your file. On supported browsers, a codec that has already been used is cached so the same conversion can work offline.

    Is there a file size or quantity limit?

    There is no limit imposed by us. The practical ceiling is your device’s memory, since the image has to be held uncompressed while converting. On a typical laptop, images up to around 100 megapixels convert without trouble.

    Will converting to AVIF lose quality?

    AVIF is a lossy format, so some data is discarded. At the default quality setting the difference is not visible at normal viewing sizes. If you need an exact copy of the pixels, choose PNG instead.

    Does it work on a phone?

    Yes. The same WebAssembly modules run on mobile browsers. Conversion is slower than on a desktop because phone CPUs are weaker, and very large images are more likely to hit memory limits.

    My PNG is a screenshot — anything to watch for?

    Screenshots are mostly flat colour and sharp text, which is what lossy formats handle worst. If the target is lossy, text edges can pick up faint halos. Use a high quality setting, or stay with PNG if the text has to remain crisp.

    Where does AVIF actually work?

    Every major browser decodes AVIF natively, so it is safe for use on the web. Desktop applications lag further behind — plenty of image viewers and editors still cannot open it. Encoding is also noticeably slower than the other formats here, so expect a large image to take a few seconds.
