なぜ JPEG を JPEG XL に変換するのか
同じ写真であれば、JPEG XL は元の JPEG よりもかなり小さく収まるのが普通です。ページの読み込み容量を削りたいとき、アップロード上限に収めたいときに効いてきます。
JPEG XL はアルファチャンネルに対応しているので、変換後に背景を切り抜けます。ただし変換そのものが、元の JPEG になかった透明部分を作り出すわけではありません。
どちらも非可逆形式です。再エンコードのたびに少しずつディテールが失われるため、何度も変換を経たコピーではなく、元のファイルから変換するのが得策です。
This conversion is unlike every other one on this site, and it is worth understanding why before you judge it by the usual standards. JPEG XL can take an existing JPEG and repack it losslessly — not re-encode it, repack it — coming out around 20 percent smaller with the original JPEG recoverable byte for byte, metadata and all. There is no quality decision to make and nothing is thrown away.

Why this is possible at all
JPEG XL's coding tools are a superset of JPEG's. That means it can express everything a JPEG contains and then apply better entropy coding on top — asymmetric numeral systems in place of Huffman, smarter prediction of DC coefficients. The picture is not touched; only the way it is written down changes. This is the one case in image conversion where "smaller" and "identical" are both true at the same time.
You cannot ship the result yet
As of August 2026, Safari is the only browser that opens a JXL out of the box. Chrome 145 shipped a decoder in February but keeps it behind a flag, with default-on expected in the second half of the year; Firefox 152 is in the same position behind image.jxl.enabled. Browsers that decode JXL without the user doing anything cover roughly 14 percent of visitors — which becomes 85 to 90 percent the day Chrome flips the switch. Until then, JXL is a storage format, not a delivery format.
Where it genuinely pays off today
A photo archive. If you are holding tens of thousands of JPEGs on a disk or in object storage, this takes a fifth off the bill with no quality decision, no one-way risk and full reversibility — you can turn any of them back into the exact original JPEG whenever you need to. That is a genuinely rare proposition, and it does not depend on any browser shipping anything.

よくある質問
JPEG ファイルはどこかにアップロードされますか？
いいえ。デコーダーとエンコーダーはこのページ内で動く WebAssembly モジュールです。形式を初めて使う際はネットワークタブにコーデックの取得が表示されることがありますが、ファイルを含む通信はありません。対応ブラウザでは一度使ったコーデックがキャッシュされ、以後は同じ変換をオフラインでも実行できます。
ファイルサイズや枚数の制限はありますか？
当サイト側では設けていません。実際の上限は端末のメモリです。変換中は画像を非圧縮で保持する必要があるためです。一般的なノートパソコンなら、1 億画素程度までは問題なく変換できます。
JPEG XL に変換すると画質は落ちますか？
JPEG XL は非可逆形式のため、一部のデータが捨てられます。既定の品質設定であれば、通常の表示サイズで違いが見えることはありません。ピクセル単位で完全に同じコピーが必要な場合は PNG を選んでください。
スマートフォンでも使えますか？
はい。同じ WebAssembly モジュールがモバイルブラウザでも動作します。スマートフォンの CPU は非力なためデスクトップより時間がかかり、非常に大きな画像ではメモリの上限に達しやすくなります。
JPEG から変換すると、さらに画質が落ちますか？
変換先も非可逆形式であれば、わずかに落ちます。手元の JPEG はすでにデータを捨てており、二度目の非可逆エンコードでもう少し捨てられるためです。品質 80 以上ならこの二度目の劣化はほとんど分かりませんが、同じファイルを何度も往復させるのではなく元データを保管しておくべき理由がここにあります。
JPEG XL はもう使える段階ですか？
部分的には使えます。Safari は以前から対応しており、Chrome も 2026 年初頭に正式対応しましたが、全体の対応率は依然として 15% 前後です。汎用性より圧縮品質が重視される保存・アーカイブ用途には向いていますが、今日公開ウェブサイトに載せる画像には向きません。
